Designing Cognito: free, friendly, and built to respect you

When we set out to make a brain-training app, we kept bumping into the same tension. The training itself wants to be calm — quiet, legible, distraction-free. But the thing that keeps people coming back is progression: levels, XP, streaks, that little hit of “one more.” How do you have both?

Two moods, one app

Our answer was to split the personality. Everything around the games — the home dashboard, the level-ups, the celebrations — leans bright and energetic. The games themselves stay clean: simple boards, soft highlights, generous spacing. You feel the fun on the way in, then the noise drops away the second you start playing.

Playful on the outside, focused on the inside. That one rule settled a hundred smaller design arguments.

A score that means something

Points are abstract, so they roll up into a Brain Score and into levels — Beginner upward — with a visible bar toward the next one. Your Brain Score rises with accurate play and dips on mistakes, so it actually reflects how you're doing rather than how long you've grinded.

Respecting the player

1Adaptive difficulty so you're challenged but never stuck.
2Quick sessions — train in a few minutes, then get on with your day.
3Everything works without nagging ads or upsells in the middle of a game.

We're still tuning it, and this blog is where we'll share what we learn. If you play, tell us what feels great and what doesn't — it genuinely shapes what we build next.
