How to remember names: 5 memory techniques that work

Forgetting a name ten seconds after hearing it isn't a memory defect — it's an attention one. You were busy planning what to say next, so the name never really landed. These five techniques fix the landing.

Five techniques

1Repeat it immediately: “Nice to meet you, Priya.” Saying it once moves it from heard to used.
2Use it again before the conversation ends — a second, spaced retrieval locks it in.
3Make a quick mental image that links the name to something vivid or to the face.
4Connect it to someone you already know with that name — you're borrowing an existing hook.
5If you didn't catch it, ask right away. A two-second “sorry, your name again?” beats a year of avoiding it.
You don't forget names because your memory is bad. You forget them because you never paid attention in the first place.

The underlying skill — holding something briefly, then actively retrieving it — is working memory, and it's trainable. Memory games like Memory Flash and Card Pairs in Cognito are reps for that exact muscle.
